Physical Activity in Schools
Being active is an important part of staying healthy and feeling good. At Southwestern Public Health (SWPH), we want to help students, teachers and families include more movement in their school day.
Here’s how we can help:
What is Quality Daily Physical Activity (QDPA)?
Schools must to give students at least 20 minutes of physical activity every day. This means doing activities that get your heart pumping and muscles working. Daily activity can help students:
-
Feel more confident and positive
-
Focus better in class
-
Build teamwork and social skills
-
Stay healthier, both physically and mentally
What is the Playground Activity Leader (PALS) program in schools?
The PALS (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools) program is designed to encourage all students, regardless of their gender, size, or ability, to participate in fun and engaging activities at school. Originally developed in Peel Region, the program has been updated to include a focus on:
-
Equity and inclusion: Ensuring everyone feels welcome and valued.
-
Accessibility: Making activities suitable for all abilities.
-
Mental health promotion: Supporting well-being through active play.
-
Infection prevention: Encouraging safe and healthy practices.
PALS is approved for use in Ontario schools and is a great way to build teamwork, promote leadership and create a more active and inclusive playground.
PALS resources for schools:
Certificates and forms
Handbooks and games
What is the ACT-i-Pass program?
The ACT-i-Pass is a free card for Grade 5 students that gives them access to fun activities like skating, swimming, karate and golf for a whole year. Some activities even allow a friend or family member to join!
Activities and providers may change throughout the year, so be sure to visit the ACT-i-Pass website to explore recreation opportunities near you that match your interests.
