Why is mental health important?
- When we have mental and physical health influence one another and both are needed for fulfilling lives.
- Mental health is important no matter what age you are. Children’s mental health impacts their ability to learn, make friends, participate in activities and feel well. In short having good mental health helps children grow and enjoy their lives.
How can I help my child be mentally well?
- Having a sense of belonging is one of the best ways to protect against poor mental health outcomes.
- Helping your child feel supported, cared for, and included improves their sense of belonging and mental health.
- You can help your child feel like they belong by:
- Asking them about their day, interests, and friends
- Actively listening to their concerns
- Encouraging them to pursue their interests
- Supporting them overcome challenges
- Encourage them to participate in activities and in person social gatherings
I am concerned about my child's mental health, what should I do?
- If you are concerned for your child’s safety, or the safety of other people because of your child call 911.
- If you are concerned about your child’s mental health but they are not in immediate danger, you can use community referral resources such as:
- Often your child’s school can help facilitate help for your child. Check with your school’s office on what resources may be available to you.
How does public health help my child's mental health?
- Public Health works to build belonging in school communities by providing programming, resources, and consultations.
- Some examples of programs which we offer in schools include:
- Healthy Relationships Plus Program

- Wellness Cafes
- Mental Health Literacy
- Recess Student Leadership Programming
