How can the 10-5-2-1-0 rule keep your child healthy?
The 10-5-2-1-0 guide is a simple way to remember daily recommendations that can support your child’s health. This approach, endorsed by the Canadian Paediatric Society, includes tips on sleep, nutrition, screen time, physical activity, and drink choices.
Here’s how it works:
-
10 hours of sleep each night
-
Set a consistent bedtime and stick to it
-
Keep screens (like TVs and tablets) out of their bedroom
-
Avoid drinks with caffeine (like pop or tea) before bed
-
Practice deep breathing together to relax before bed
-
5 servings of vegetables and fruits each day
-
Offer fruits and vegetables at every meal and snack
-
Involve your child in picking out new fruits or vegetables to try
-
Keep a bowl of cut-up veggies in the fridge for easy snacks
-
2 hours or less of screen time each day
-
Limit screen time, including TV, video games, and tablets
-
Eat meals together without screens to connect as a family
-
Provide other fun options like books, crafts, or outdoor play
-
1 hour of active play each day
-
Plan family activities like walking, dancing, or playing games
-
Encourage your child to try sports or join fun activities
-
Let them help with active chores like sweeping or gardening
-
0 sugary drinks each day
-
Offer water as the main drink option
-
Limit juice to one small cup of 100 per cent juice a day
-
Avoid energy drinks, soft drinks, and other sugar-sweetened beverages
-
Encourage children to drink two cups of milk alternative or milk with calcium and vitamin D
