Preconception and Pregnancy

If you’re planning to have a baby or are already pregnant, we’re here to help! This page has tips and information to guide you every step of the way.

How can I prepare before pregnancy?

Getting your body ready for pregnancy can help keep you and your baby healthy. Learn about what to do before you conceive from the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC).

Here’s what you can do:

  • Visit your doctor or health care provider: Talk about your health, any medicine you take, and what changes might help you.

  • Take a daily vitamin with folic acid: This can help prevent birth defects.

  • Quit smoking and avoid alcohol: Both can make it harder to get pregnant and may harm your baby. Check our support page to quit smoking.

  • Eat healthy and stay active: A balanced diet and regular exercise are good for you and your baby.

  • Lower your stress: Try things like deep breathing or yoga to feel calmer.

How do I take care of myself during pregnancy?

Your health is important for your baby’s growth. Follow these tips to take care of yourself:

  • Go to all your check-ups: Regular appointments help make sure you and your baby are doing well.

  • Eat healthy and keep moving: Choose foods with lots of nutrients and stay active in ways you enjoy. Check out our healthy foods page for more information.

  • Get the right vaccines: Some vaccines can protect both you and your baby from illnesses. Learn about important immunizations and vaccines on our page.

  • Avoid harmful things: Don’t drink alcohol, smoke, or use other substances that could harm your baby.

What infections am I at risk for during pregnancy?

Some infections can be more serious when you’re pregnant. Here are a few to be aware of:

  • Chickenpox (varicella)

  • Fifth disease (parvovirus B19)

  • Influenza (flu)

  • Listeriosis (listeria)

  • Rubella (German measles)

  • Shingles

  • Toxoplasmosis

If you're concerned about any symptoms or have questions about infections, speak to your health care provider.
