Mosquito bites usually cause itchy bumps, while tick bites might not hurt or itch at first. If a tick is attached to you, you’ll see it on your skin.
Vector-Borne Diseases
Diseases like Lyme disease and West Nile Virus are vector-borne diseases because they can spread through infected tick and mosquito bites. Protecting yourself is easy when you follow a few simple steps.
How can you prevent mosquito and tick bites?
Take these steps to protect yourself and your family:
-
Use insect repellent: Follow the label directions.
-
Wear protective clothing: Cover up with long-sleeved shirts, pants, and closed-toe shoes, especially in wooded or grassy areas.
-
Check for ticks after being outside: Examine your body and pets for ticks. Pay close attention to hidden areas like your neck, underarms, and behind your knees.
-
Shower after outdoor activities: A quick shower can help wash off ticks that haven’t attached yet.
-
Reduce mosquito habitats: Dump out standing water from flowerpots, birdbaths, and outdoor toys to stop mosquitoes from breeding.
What should you do if you’re bitten?
For tick bites:
-
Remove the tick safely: Use tweezers to grab it close to your skin. Pull straight out without twisting.
-
Wash the area: Clean the bite with soap and water or rubbing alcohol.
-
Keep the tick: Place it in a small container or bag in case it needs identification.
-
Monitor for symptoms: Watch for fever, chills, or a bull’s-eye rash. Contact your doctor if you notice these or feel unwell.

For mosquito bites:
-
Ease the itch: Apply a cold compress or calamine lotion to reduce discomfort.
-
Watch for symptoms: If you develop fever, headache, or body aches, see your doctor right away.
