Southwestern Public Health Medical Officer of Health Warns Community COVID-19 Still Around

Significant jump in cases reported in the region over the past two weeks

Following the laboratory confirmation of eight cases of COVID-19 in the Southwestern Public Health region over a two-week period, the Medical Officer of Health urges community members to behave as though everyone is a possible source of infection.

“As a community, we’re tired. We want to let our guard down, but we can’t. There are six active cases in our region. They range in age from teens to mid 50s. While the source of infection has not been traced in all cases yet, often it resulted from close contact with a friend or family member,” says Dr. Joyce Lock, Medical Officer of Health for the region.

“There are two pieces of information that are imperative for everyone. First, if you have been instructed by public health to self-isolate at home, you must do so. Second, physical distancing works. Our region is in Phase 3 of re-opening. It is really important to keep doing everything you can to protect yourself and those around you. Wash your hands frequently. Stay home when you are sick. Wear a non-medical mask. And importantly, unless you are in your social circle of ten people, keep 2 metres of distance between yourself and other people,” she emphasized.

The public health unit is still operating its COVID-19 Information Line seven days a week between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. The number is 1-800-922-0096 x 9. Residents are encouraged to call if they have any questions, rather than relying on potentially inaccurate information circulating on social media.
