  • Southwestern Public Health Warns of Rising Cases of Pertussis in the Region

    Here is some additional information about pertussis along with a recording of what 'whooping cough' sounds like in young children. Pertussis can begin as a mild fever, runny nose, with red watery eyes and a cough. It leads to serious coughing fits that may cause breathing difficulty, choking or vomiting.

    SWPH investigating illnesses at a high school staff event in St. Thomas

    Southwestern Public Health has been working closely with Thames Valley District School Board to investigate a group of illnesses from a catered staff event at Parkside Collegiate Institute on April 8th. Approximately half of the nearly 100 faculty who attended developed gastrointestinal symptoms shortly after the event took place.

    The incident took place on April 12, 2024, at the intersection of Glenwood Street and Oakmont Street in St. Thomas, ON, between 7:48 - 8:00AM.

  • Public Health issues annual reminder about fluoride and sodium

    Southwestern Public Health is issuing a public reminder about levels of naturally present fluoride and sodium in some of Oxford County’s municipal drinking water which may pose a concern for specific residents. Parents with children seven years of age and under should be aware of fluoride exposure to prevent dental fluorosis, while those on sodium-restricted diets should pay close attention to sodium they may be consuming from municipal water.
