New therapy program for perinatal mood disorders
Southwestern Public Health launching the new no-cost program in fall 2023
The Healthy Babies, Healthy Children team at Southwestern Public Health is launching a new program this fall for perinatal mental health.
Balanced Beginning is a group-based Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) program for individuals who are pregnant or have a child under 18 months of age and experiencing depression, anxiety, or feeling down or overwhelmed. The no-cost, small group format is a unique service offering for Oxford County, Elgin County and the City of St. Thomas. There is also no requirement for a referral from a health care provider.
During the nine-week sessions, individuals will learn skills, strategies, and tools to help manage perinatal mood disorders with a focus on goal setting and celebrating achievements. The perinatal period includes pregnancy and postpartum.
The Health Unit has two virtual sessions available, one starting September 20 and another starting October 17. Capacity is limited. Additional sessions will be announced at a later date.
Enrollment is required through the sign up form at swpublichealth.ca/balancedbeginning. A public health nurse will reach out to all those who sign up to ensure the program meets their needs and to provide resources and support for anyone experiencing perinatal mood disorders.
