SWPH CEO encourages inclusion, kindness during Pride
June 15, 2023
Belonging and inclusion are essential for healthy, vibrant communities.
Southwestern Public Health stands in solidarity with those promoting love, inclusivity, and kindness through events like Pride. And we are bolstered by those who speak up and speak out when they witness hateful acts taking place in our communities.
Health equity is created when individuals have a fair opportunity to reach their fullest health potential. Income, race, gender, sexuality, and education all play a role in whether individuals have a fair opportunity to be everything they are meant to be. Public health promotes equity, because it is only through an equity lens that we can truly understand – and then dismantle – the barriers to health and wellness in our own communities.
Each of us has an opportunity, every day, to reduce barriers to inclusion and belonging and to build a community that celebrates its diversity. Attending events, shopping at businesses that promote inclusion, engaging with anti-oppressive organizations, and speaking up when you hear hateful language are ways you can make our communities safer and more welcoming.
I am grateful to Pride organizers, local leaders, and community members for boldly celebrating love and prioritizing the safety of everyone in attendance at Pride events. Thank you for what you do to make Oxford County, Elgin County, and the City of St. Thomas vibrant and healthy – during Pride and all year long.
